That’s an interesting question I’ve never thought about before. No, no-one in my family has ever been a scientist before me. My Dad started off doing science A levels but dropped out after a few months to go to agricultural college, and my Mum left school at 16 to become a secretary. I got into science entirely from reading about it or seeing it on TV and from experiencing practical work at school. I guess I am living proof that being a scientist isn’t a genetic trait!
Sort of. My mum was a doctor (now retired) and my dad always had an interest in engineering (he’s good with cars and the like). So, although they didn’t say “You should become a scientist.” there was a love of science and engineering in the house. What they did encourage me to do, though was go to university, and they knew that I liked science, so that was an obvious thing to study.
