I did a Masters degree at the university of Leicester followed by a PhD at Durham Uni, which qualified me. There are lots of other, different routes into science though such as apprenticeships and jobs where you learn while you work

I did a degree in chemistry at university, then after I graduated I was unemployed and looking for a job. I had sent my CV out to some job search websites and one day one of them rang me and said that they had shown it to someone who wanted to give me a job interview. That’s how I got to work at the company where I am now.
At first I was in the labs, but I helped out doing what I do now when they needed someone. Then, when they needed someone to do the job full-time, the manager came and asked me if I wanted to do it. I’ve been doing this job ever since.
