When I was at school I had thought about doing medicine, but I didn’t really get the exam results I needed, and anyway I wasn’t sure it was for me. I was still expected to go to university though (ask your parents about Tony Blair) and chemistry was my best subject at school. I found a degree that I really like the look of doing that, and off I went.
When I graduated, it was just during the depression and I couldn’t get a permanent job. I did some part-time work and also thought about leaving science and joining the police. In the end, though, I did find a permanent job and I can’t complain about the way my life’s turned out.
