In MONPLAS, 14 researchers are working all over Europe to develop techniques and methodologies for detection of micro and nano plastics.
I am also working on developing a technique call surface enhanaced Raman spectroscopy for detection of micro and nano plastics in drinking water.
Microplastics have been found in human blood, placenta, sea animals, drinking water, soil, air etc, it seems they are everywhere. This omnipresence of microplastics coupled with their negative effects on living things is a growing concern which requires detection and elimination of these tiny particles.
I am working on developing a method that will allow detection of micro and nano plastics in drinking water.

My Typical Day:
I wake up at 7 am, make breakfast ready for the family. At 07:30, I wake up the kids and help them get ready for school. After dropping them off to school, I take the bus to university. After leaving my bags in my office and meeting my office mates, I go to the lab which I leave around lunch time. After having lunch I go to the lab again to work some more. I go back home around 06:00 pm.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I also want to arrange a trip to Aston university for the class I have the chat with to show them around the campus. I have a lot of photonics related fun activities (such as laser chess) and science experiments (difraction, refelction) planned for the trip which will be entertaining as well as educating for the students. I understand there are a lot of logistics involved in planning in such a trip and that is where the prize money will be used.
I believe if this trip happens it will be a very good learning experience for the students providing a sneak peak into the world of Engineering.
